With the mandatory use of IMO 2020 compliant fuels (such as, VLSFO), there has been an increase in VLSFO-related incidents, creating challenges for ship operators bunkers suppliers, as well as cylinder lubricating oil suppliers.
Speaking at Riviera’s Maritime Air Pollution, Europe conference, our Technical and Solutions Director, Mr. Don Gregory said that some of these incidents could have been resolved with a switch from the BN 40 to a higher BN cylinder oil. Gulf Oil Marine has actually developed a Cylinder Oil Blending Unit (COBU) to quickly manage the BN of cylinder oil. The completely plug-and-play COBU batch-blends cylinder oil which could be in the system within an hour, a far faster switch than traditional cylinder oil changes of up to two days.
“If conditions in the liner are excellent, the COBU can be adjusted downwards and the portion of the more costly detergency component can be reduced, saving operating expenses,” said Don.
But as Don pointed out, even with the COBU, it does not replace the need for diligent care and regular inspection.
