Some 140 Sailors’ Society supporters took on a 32km trek along the Hong Kong trail to raise money for the global maritime charity.

More used to heat and blue skies, the teams braved strong winds and torrential rain as they hiked across Hong Kong’s country parks, their generous donors pledging HKD548,000 (US$59,000) for their efforts.

The event was organised by Sailors’ Society’s Hong Kong Ambassadors Group and sponsored by Lloyd’s Register Hong Kong, Univan, Wallem and Willis, with support from AMA, Gulf Oil Marine and Reed Smith.

“It was a great team effort considering the terrain and weather, but the real winners are Sailors’ Society who have raised US$59,000 for their global welfare services for seafarers,” said Lloyd’s Register QA’s Managing Director, John Rowley, who participated in the fundraising trek.

Gulf Oil Marine’s ‘Happy Feet’ team took the fastest team prize, completing the challenge in 4 hours 48 minutes, closely followed by team Reed Smith Richards Buttler in second place, and Wallem Ship Management’s ‘Wallem Walkers’ in third. Latitude Brokers were awarded the prize for the highest fundraisers, raising a total of HKD125,000 (USD16,000) for Sailors’ Society’s work supporting seafarers and their families in times of need.

Companies who took part in the challenge included Anglo Eastern Ship Management, The Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Association (HK) Ltd, C Solutions (HK) Ltd, Caravel Resources Ltd, China LNG Shipping (Int'l) Co Ltd, Gulf Oil Marine, Ince & Co, Latitude Brokers, Lloyd's Register, LSR, Pacific Basin, Reed Smith Richards Butler, RPC, Santander, Telemar, Univan, Wallem, Watson Farley and Williams, Willis, and Young Professionals In Shipping Network.
