International maritime charity, the Sailors’ Society announces a multi-year partnering agreement with leading worldwide marine lubricant marketer Gulf Oil Marine

Keith Mullin CEO of Gulf Oil Marine said, “As an ex seafarer myself I am acutely aware of the significant and critical role that Seafarers play in the shipping business and we cannot succeed without their dedicated work.” Gulf Oil Marine has joined with the Sailors Society to form a long-term support channel to better assist the critical seafarer.

To initiate the new multiyear partnering agreement, Gulf Oil Marine is providing hospital packs for the seafarer community throughout 2013. The company is also a sponsor of the Charity’s fundraising Hong Kong Shipping Dinner on 21st February. “The Sailors’ Society does a great job of looking after seafarers worldwide and we would encourage other companies to help them raise funds to continue their good work.”

The hospital packs, which will be distributed by the charity’s Port Chaplains to seafarers undergoing medical treatment, contain a mobile phone with a SIM card to enable stranded sailors to make contact with loved ones back home. They also include essential provisions such as a razor, soap, comb, and after-shave.

Speaking on behalf of the Sailors Society, Jan Webber, Director of Fundraising said, “The hospital packs donated by Gulf Oil Marine, will make a world of difference to seafarers, who are quite often away from home for months at a time. This is an excellent gesture made by the company, to show seafarers they are cared for, at a time when they are far from their homes and families and feeling vulnerable and isolated.”

Sailors’ Society provides global support for seafarers, who often spend a lot of time offshore while awaiting their next load of cargo, and hospital treatment can prolong this period. Through their Port Chaplains, the Charity provides emotional and practical support to the sailors during this time. The Charity is reliant on donations from the shipping industry and the public to enable them to carry out this work.

Note to Editors

The Sailors’ Society is an international charity that provides a personal lifeline for seafarers throughout the world. Existing to enrich and enhance the well-being of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers, the charity offers practical help, emotional and spiritual support and, when in dire need, financial assistance and family liaison through our Port Chaplains and Seafarers’ Centres. Our Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships every year, directly addressing the needs of seafarers - irrespective of a person’s belief or nationality - as well as maintaining vital links within the Ports that they operate.

Case Study of Sailors’ Society’s work

After several months at sea, a seafarer was keen to talk to his wife. After taking himself to a local payphone, where he managed to have a short conversation with her, he was interrupted by someone else wanting to use the phone. Preoccupied with thoughts of the conversation, he stepped into the path of a car and was knocked over and rushed to hospital.

Our Chaplain was informed and rushed to his bedside. The Chaplain contacted the seafarer’s family, organised for his wife and son to travel to him and in the meantime, waited with him at his bedside.
