Exploring Ammonia's Impact on Lubrication at the Asian Tribology Conference
18 Sep 2024
Leading tribologists from Europe and Asia gathered at the recent Asia International Conference on Tribology (ASIATRIB) and China International Conference on Tribology (CICT) to share and discuss new developments in the field.

In anticipation of the forthcoming ammonia 2-stroke engines, Gulf Marine has been doing research and due-diligence to better understand ammonia vis a vis lubrication. Dr. Edward Ng, Gulf Marine’s General Manager for Technology, took the opportunity to present Gulf Marine’s research on the impact of ammonia contamination and ageing on the performance of lubricants, sharing our key findings and insights with the tribo-chemists and lubricant technology developers and experts for their critique.
Edward presneted our latest research on the impact of ammonia contamination
In our study, ammonia and nitrogen dioxide contaminants were introduced to our lubricants in order to assess the degree of oil degradation. The altered / contaminated oils were analysed in terms of their chemistries and also evaluated for their performance indicators such as oxidation, corrosion, deposit formation, and wear properties.
Sharing our key findings and insights
While the cylinder oil and system oil were impacted differently by the contamination, the tests / evaluations did not indicate any significant impairment of the oils’ performances. At the conference, there were discussions on the impacts at a chemical component-level in order to make better sense of the different impact for cylinder oil and system oil.
